The Level of Being: What Gurdjieff Taught Instead of Prayer

Before there was an Institute, there were two decades of travel. By his own account, G.I. Gurdjieff spent the early part of his life moving through the Caucasus, Central Asia, and monasteries scattered from Egypt to Tibet, tracking down fragments of a teaching he believed had mostly gone extinct in the West. Historians still argue about how much of that journey happened exactly as he told it. What’s not in dispute is what he brought back: by the time he opened the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man at the Château du Prieuré outside Paris in 1922, he wasn’t offering his students a new religion. He was offering something closer to an owner’s manual, and most of what it said contradicted the way people had been taught to pray.

“Every one of those unfortunates during the process of existence should constantly sense and be cognizant of the inevitability of his own death as well as of the death of everyone upon whom his eyes or attention rests”. G.I. Gurdjieff

Petition had almost no place in it. Asking an external force to rearrange your circumstances on your behalf was, to Gurdjieff, close to a category error. What he taught instead was harder to sit with and, in the end, more honest: the level of your being determines the reality you experience, and no amount of asking changes that reality until the level itself changes.

The Premise Behind the Fourth Way

One look at Georges Gurdjieff and you can see you are in front of a unique and special person. That intent and powerful stare is enough to either intrigue or disturb you.

So let’s focus on the entire premise of the Fourth Way. Most people, in Gurdjieff’s account, function from a fragmented, mechanical state of consciousness, run by conditioning rather than anything that could fairly be called choice. Transformation, in this framework, isn’t a request directed outward. It’s the deliberate raising of one’s own inner state, done from the inside, with no shortcut available. In other words, without looking in, you cannot bring forth the true and real you.

This is why self-observation carried so much weight in his teaching. It wasn’t optional groundwork before the real work started. It was close to the foundation of the real work itself. You can’t change your level of being while you’re still asleep to what that level currently is.

The Mechanical Man Gets a Mechanical Universe

The mechanical man, reactive, identified with whatever thought or emotion happens to be passing through, runs on conditioning and gets a mechanical universe in return. Same disappointments. Same circumstances, recurring on a loop. Not because the world is rigged against him, but because nothing in the observer has actually shifted to receive anything different. A closed loop doesn’t produce an open result. This makes for a perfect person fitting in a perfect mold yielding predictable results. Social media is one such platforms.

An Old Law in Different Languages

It seems the esoteric traditions kept arriving at this for Gurdjieff from different directions which he gave it different names. The Hermetic principle of vibration holds that everything, consciousness included, exists at a frequency, and that a raised inner state alters what a person perceives and attracts. This tracks closely with the third wave of Hermeticism in the US. It’s closer to a description of how attention, perception, and opportunity function together than to anything resembling magical thinking. Someone operating from a higher level of presence notices different possibilities, makes different decisions, and draws different responses from the people around them than that same person does while running on anxiety or reactivity. Same person. Different frequency. Different world showing up on the other end of it.

You don’t change your life by praying for new circumstances. You change it by becoming someone circumstances organize differently around. And if this sounds fairly familiar, it should. Many modern teachers attract strong following on revisiting these ancient system and promise to bring you enlightenment. However, some will also leave you to deal with the consequences and rarely, if ever give a bone fide teacher lineage.

What level of being have you been operating from? And what might shift if you deliberately raised it?
