What If You’ve Been Praying to the Wrong Address?

By Nicolas Zart | TheWholisticCenter.com

Do you feel as if you’ve spent years talking to a ceiling? Many do. We even see atheist pray these days, perhaps not to a god, but for an answer. It’s become a norm. And you’re not alone.

So how could we praying in a wrong way. Could we finally acknowledge the rarely-spoken feeling underneath ours prayers that the signal wasn’t landing. Have we sent something out and little to nothing was coming back? We often push the feeling down, pray harder, sometimes wait for the breakthrough that other people seemed to be having. I want to experience. Everyone does. And when prayers went quiet, we were told it was a faith problem. A discipline problem. Something we needed to fix about myself. Because, you see, we’re not perfect.

Phooie! It wasn’t any of those things. It was a routing problem.

That realization didn’t come from a sermon or books. It came from one of the oldest recovered teachings in Christian history — a cosmology that was systematically buried, labeled heresy, and nearly destroyed. A teaching that, according to the ancient Gnostic texts found in Egypt in 1945, Jesus delivered privately to Mary Magdalene after the crowds went home.

And this teaching would have a lasting con sequence. It said, stop praying the way you’ve been praying. It isn’t worthless. But this type of prayer is aiming at the wrong destination.

Here’s what the Gnostic tradition — the mystical current running beneath first-century Christianity — actually teaches about the shape of the cosmos.

Early Gnostic Prayer

At the origin of everything is the Monad: the undivided, infinite Source from which all consciousness emanated. This is a far cry from the a god sitting on a throne jugemental. It wasn’t a being above you waiting to receive requests. The singular origin point of existence itself — and the source of a divine spark, the pneuma, that lives inside every human being.

Between you and that Source, according to the Gnostic map, are layers. This reminds us of the three greatest Yogas, Mahayoga, Anuyoga, and Atiyoga, with Dzogchen among them that states you are perfect, just your view is a little clouded.

According to the early Gnostics, the material world was created not by the Monad but by a lesser consciousness — the Demiurge, a being so separated from the original light that he didn’t know what he was missing, and genuinely believed himself to be the highest God. Managing the layers between us and Source are the Archons: rulers of the cosmic spheres, operating on a very specific frequency.

That frequency is separation. Lack. Petition. The consciousness of a being who believes it is cut off from Source and is reaching upward toward something it doesn’t have.

Which is, almost exactly, the structure of conventional prayer.

Tap The Source

This is the part that thrilled when I first encountered it. Another ancient text supporting others saying the same thing. The part about petitionary prayer — the dominant form in Western religion for two thousand years — is built on three assumptions: God is above you, God is separate from you, and something must mediate the connection. Distance, hierarchy, mediation. Every one of those assumptions broadcasts on precisely the frequency the Archonic layer is designed to receive. This is one of the tenants of the Judeo-Christian societies the West has, sinners who have to wait for an external Messiah to deliver them from their sins. This is radically opposite from the Gnostics and higher Yoga practitioners, and highly controversial for anyone wanting to maintain control over a society.

You’re not reaching the Source. You’re appealing to the filter.

The alternative that Jesus was handing to Mary wasn’t a better prayer technique. It was the original orientation — a complete reversal of what has been taught since.

The pneuma inside you is not from the Demiurge’s creation. It is where you find the Monad inward in a material body. Which means the Monad is not above you. It is not outside you. The connection to the Source already exists, inside you, as the deepest layer of what you are.

In some ways, you don’t reach up to the Monad. You remember inward to the spark.

How to Tap The Source

In practice, this looks less like prayer and more like stillness — but not the surface stillness of trying to quiet your mind. This is also vulgarization of meditation. Many in the West think that meditating and sitting still with no thoughts. While that can be one form of meditation, the one we’re talking about is subtle stilling of the mind through quiet observation. And deeper than that, beneath the thoughts, the emotional weather, beneath the story your mind runs about what you need and what’s wrong is that spark. There all along, still. This is that space that was never noisy in the first place. Some call that layer the pneuma. When your attention rests there — not forced, just genuinely resting — it begins to resonate at its own natural frequency. The frequency of its origin.

That resonance is the contact. Not a request sent upward. A remembering turned inward.

The Archons, for all their structural influence, cannot intercept it. They are tuned to the frequency of separation and lack. Just turn on your TV or on social media and see what we’re talking about. The resonance of the pneuma with the Monad doesn’t broadcast on any frequency they can receive. And I don’t think you are here to defeat the system. At one point, you chose to experience it. Now you have a chance to see it and chose a different experience. Others might not. want or be there quite yet. You must respect their wishes, voiced or not.

Once you simply become aware of this, things start to take on a different meaning. You’re no longer caught up in the game. Everything becomes relevant to that stillness. You withdraw your participation — entirely, without conflict, not out of spite or sadness — but by stopping the broadcast the energy these archons depend on.

Mary Magdalene was feared and loathed from the early Christ companion to the church. Jesus treated her differently because she understood what others have difficulties grasping. She was the first practitioner of this teaching in that group. That’s why the ancient texts say she understood the teaching more completely than anyone around Jesus. That’s why she was the closest to Jesus. That’s why she was the first to recognize him after the resurrection — not with her eyes, but with her pneuma recognizing his divine nature even in its transformed state. Recognition, not identification. Resonance, not sight. And one word you may have heard before, Namaste, can be interpreted to say, the divinity in me recognizes the divinity in you.

The institutional church spent considerable energy removing her from that position in the founding story. Replacing pneumatic recognition with manly apostolic authority. Replacing direct access with mediated permission. Replacing Mary with a system. Going as low as to call her a whore, his favorite disciple.

The system that has been running for two thousand years is showing signs of wear and tear as more evidence show up giving us a different vision of the past.

Thankfully, the teaching survived — in the desert, in the mystics, in certain communities, in the quiet undercurrent of every tradition that kept pointing people inward rather than upward. And it is available now. It wasn’t taught as something to believe in, but as something to do — or rather, to stop doing. Something to observe. Direct knowledge. Gnosis.

The next time you feel the impulse to send the signal upward, pause. Don’t suppress the impulse — the reach toward the divine is sacred. Just redirect it. I still find myself in some situation praying upward. I stop and smile, remember that spark within. Then, I turn within. It takes time to become a reflex.

So instead of upward, go inward. Beneath the words. Beneath the asking. Down to the layer that has been quietly, permanently, waiting there your whole life. In that delightful stillness and observe the original way, that is inward contemplation where the Monad resides inside the pleroma within.

Then, quietly, rest in it. Don’t ask for anything. Just observe in silence. Thoughts in, and out. Like a bird in the sky, it appears out of nowhere and goes somewhere. Who cares…

See what responds.
